Do hard things
Often...
This week, it’s important to highlight the importance of doing hard things regularly. In our daily lives, we often try to avoid difficult tasks and opt for easy options.

However, we forget the fact that the more we push ourselves out of our comfort zones, the more we grow and learn. When we do hard things regularly, we challenge ourselves, build resilience, and improve our mental and physical health.
In the words of Jocko Willink, a retired Navy SEAL and bestselling author, "Discipline equals freedom." The more disciplined we become, the more freedom we have to live our lives to the fullest.
Willink stresses the importance of
- waking up early
- working out
- doing difficult tasks
before starting the day.
In his book, "Discipline Equals Freedom," he mentions that taking control of our lives and our thoughts is key to living a successful life. By doing hard things regularly, we strengthen our mental discipline and improve our focus and productivity.
Doing hard things regularly also impacts our physical health. Rich Roll, a wellness advocate, and bestselling author explains the importance of regularly challenging our bodies in his book "Finding Ultra."
He emphasises that consistently running and enduring physical training not only improves one's physical health but also has a positive effect on mental health.
Physical challenges stimulate the production of endorphins, which improve our mood and overall mental well-being.
Pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones can also help us develop new skills or interests. When we try new and difficult things, we learn from our mistakes and improve ourselves.
For example,
- choosing not to spend time on our phone,
- learning a new language (currently Spanish!)
- taking up a new hobby
- attempting a new sport

Build resilience through actions.
It may be difficult at first, but we grow as we continue to practice and overcome challenges. By actively seeking new challenges, we can prevent complacency and maintain a growth mindset.
One of the key benefits of regularly doing hard things is that it builds our resilience. When we face adversity, we are better equipped to handle it because of the mental and physical strength we have developed through regular challenges.
Finally, doing hard things regularly helps us appreciate the good things in life. When we struggle and overcome challenges, we develop a new appreciation for the achievements and successes we have in life.
We learn that the easy path is not always the best path and that the struggle is worth it in the end.
By facing our fears and overcoming challenges, we develop a sense of accomplishment and purpose in life.
Doing hard things is crucial for areas that increase our awareness and experiences in all aspects of our mental, physical, and emotional well-being. When we push ourselves outside of our comfort zones, we challenge ourselves to grow and learn. We develop mental and physical resilience, improve our productivity and focus, and prevent complacency.
So, challenge yourself to try something new, embark on a new journey, and embrace the struggle. Remember, in the words of Jocko Willink, "The only way out is through."
When you zoom out and actually think about it, the people who truly live a wonderful life are the ones who are actively seeking to take on new challenges and push themselves through their comfort zone.
